Crocus chrysanthus: A Florist's Guide to the Golden Snow Crocus
Crocus chrysanthus is the snow crocus, also called the golden crocus: a small species crocus from the Balkans and Turkey that flowers in late winter, usually February to March, a week or two before the big Dutch crocuses. It grows from a corm, reaches only 7-10 cm, is hardy in cold climates and comes in golden yellow, cream, white, blue and bicoloured forms with a sweet honey scent.
Gardeners love it because it naturalises, comes back every year and opens on the first sunny day after frost. Below I cover the best-known varieties, when and how to plant, how to force it in a pot for a winter gift, what the crocus symbolises, and a few mix-ups worth avoiding, including saffron and the poisonous autumn crocus.
What makes Crocus chrysanthus different
Botanically the species name means "golden flower", and the wild plant is indeed bright yellow-orange, often with bronze or purple feathering on the outside of the petals. Breeders have crossed it with Crocus biflorus for over a century, so most "chrysanthus" crocuses sold in garden centres are hybrids grouped under the same name. They share the same traits: early bloom, narrow grassy leaves with a silver stripe, and several flowers from each corm.
Compared with the large-flowered Dutch crocus (Crocus vernus), snow crocuses have smaller, more rounded cups but produce more blooms per corm and flower earlier. They also cope better with poor, gritty soil and spread more readily, which is why they suit lawns, rock gardens and the front of borders.
Like all crocuses, the flowers react to light and warmth: they open wide in sun at around 10-15 degrees and close in the evening or in dull weather. That habit protects the pollen from rain and frost, and it explains why a crocus clump looks so different at nine in the morning and at noon.
Varieties worth knowing
'Cream Beauty' is the classic: soft creamy yellow with a deep orange throat, very reliable and quick to multiply. 'Blue Pearl' is pale silvery blue outside and white inside with a yellow base, one of the most delicate-looking crocuses there is. 'Snow Bunting' is pure white with a golden heart and a strong honey fragrance.
For drama, 'Ladykiller' has white petals with deep violet outer segments, so a closed bud looks purple and an open flower looks white. 'Fuscotinctus' is yellow striped with plum, 'Zwanenburg Bronze' is golden inside and mahogany outside, and 'Prins Claus' is white with a dark blue-violet blotch. 'Gipsy Girl' is bright yellow feathered with maroon.
If you plant several varieties together, choose two or three colours rather than ten: drifts of one variety look natural, while a random mix looks spotty from a distance. Cream and blue together, or white and violet, are combinations florists use when we build spring compositions.

When and how to plant the corms
Plant snow crocus corms in autumn, from September to November, while the soil is still workable. Set them pointed end up about 7-10 cm deep and 5-8 cm apart; a rough rule is two to three times the height of the corm. They want full sun or the light shade of deciduous trees, which are bare in February, and soil that drains freely. Heavy wet clay rots corms over winter, so add grit or plant on a slope.
Plant in groups of at least 15-25 corms. A single crocus disappears in a lawn; a tight drift of fifty reads as a pool of colour. In grass, lift a flap of turf, scatter the corms, press them in and fold the turf back. Do not mow until the leaves have yellowed, roughly six weeks after flowering, because the foliage feeds next year's corm.
Crocus chrysanthus is very cold-hardy and is grown successfully in Moscow and Saint Petersburg gardens, where it often opens through the last patches of snow in late March or April. The main enemies are mice and squirrels that dig up corms; a layer of fine wire mesh over the planting, or a few corms of fritillaria nearby, helps.
Forcing crocuses in a pot for a winter gift
Because they are small, snow crocuses are perfect for forcing. Fill a shallow pot with free-draining compost, set the corms almost touching with their tips just below the surface, water once and give them 12-15 weeks of cold at 2-8 degrees, in a fridge (away from fruit), an unheated garage or a cold balcony. Keep the compost barely damp.
When shoots reach 3-5 cm, bring the pot into a cool, bright room at 10-15 degrees. Flowers follow in two to three weeks. Too much warmth at this stage gives floppy leaves and short-lived blooms, so a windowsill away from the radiator is ideal. Once open, a potted crocus lasts about a week indoors; moving it to a cold spot at night stretches that.
After flowering, keep watering until the leaves die back, then plant the corms in the garden. Forced corms rarely flower well indoors a second time, but in the ground they recover within a year or two.
What the crocus means
In the language of flowers the crocus stands for cheerfulness, youthful gladness and new beginnings, simply because it is among the first flowers after winter. Yellow crocuses are read as joy, purple as dignity and admiration, white as purity and hope. A pot of crocuses is a thoughtful gift for someone recovering from illness or starting something new.
In Russia early spring flowers carry the same mood and are tied to International Women's Day on 8 March, when tulips, mimosa and other spring bouquets are everywhere. Crocuses themselves are not a typical cut flower, because their stems are too short for a vase arrangement, so for a spring message to someone in Russia most people send a bouquet of tulips or other seasonal flowers instead.
Common mix-ups: saffron and the autumn crocus
Crocus chrysanthus is not the saffron crocus. Saffron comes from Crocus sativus, which flowers in autumn and has long red stigmas; the snow crocus has small orange stigmas of no culinary use. Do not try to harvest them.
More important is the "autumn crocus", Colchicum autumnale. It looks similar but belongs to a different family, flowers in autumn and is highly poisonous to people and pets. True spring crocuses, including Crocus chrysanthus, are far less dangerous, though eating any bulb can upset a cat's or dog's stomach, so keep forced pots out of reach.

Frequently asked questions
When does Crocus chrysanthus flower?
In late winter to early spring, usually February to March in mild climates and late March to April in colder regions such as northern Russia. It flowers a week or two before the large Dutch crocuses.
How deep should I plant snow crocus corms?
About 7-10 cm deep and 5-8 cm apart, pointed end up, in autumn. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot and plant in groups of 15 or more.
Is Crocus chrysanthus poisonous?
It is only mildly toxic and may upset a pet's stomach if eaten. The truly dangerous plant is Colchicum autumnale, the so-called autumn crocus, which is a different species.
Can I grow snow crocuses in a pot indoors?
Yes. Give the potted corms 12-15 weeks of cold at 2-8 degrees, then move them to a cool, bright room, and they will flower in two to three weeks.
Does Crocus chrysanthus come back every year?
Yes, in well-drained soil it returns and slowly spreads. Let the leaves die back naturally after flowering so the corms can store energy.
