Flowers from Ecuador: What Makes Ecuadorian Roses Special
Ecuador is one of the world's best-known flower-growing countries, and its fame rests above all on roses. Grown high in the Andes, right on the equator, Ecuadorian roses have unusually long, straight stems, large heads and saturated colours, which is why they are prized by florists across Europe, Russia and North America. The country also grows carnations, gypsophila, spray roses and summer flowers, but when people say Ecuador flowers, they almost always mean roses.
In this guide a florist explains what gives these roses their reputation, which varieties and colours you are likely to see, how to recognise a quality long-stemmed rose, and how to look after one so it lasts. At the end you will find practical notes on sending a rose bouquet to someone in Russia.
Why the Andes grow such remarkable roses
The secret is geography. The main rose-growing valleys around Cayambe and Cotopaxi lie at roughly 2,500 to 3,000 metres above sea level, almost exactly on the equator. That combination gives the plants something few places on earth can offer: intense, vertical sunlight for close to twelve hours a day all year round, with cool nights and no real winter.
Strong light builds pigment, so colours come out deep and clear: reds are velvety, pinks are vivid, and even pale shades look luminous rather than washed out. Cool temperatures slow growth down. A rose that takes longer to develop forms a thicker stem and a larger bud with more petals, and its tissue is denser, which helps it last longer after cutting.
Because the sun is almost directly overhead, stems grow straight up towards the light instead of leaning. That is why stems of 70, 80 and even 100 centimetres or more are common, a length that is hard to achieve in greenhouses at northern latitudes without heavy artificial lighting.
Recognising a quality long-stemmed rose
A good rose of this type has a firm, conical bud that feels tight when you squeeze it gently near the base. If the bud is soft and the outer petals are loose, the flower was cut too long ago or stored badly. The stem should be straight, thick and evenly green, without dark patches near the cut. Leaves should be fresh and springy rather than limp or yellowed.
Look at the guard petals, the outer layer that protects the bud. Growers often leave them on for transport, and a slightly bruised or browned guard petal is normal; a florist removes them before making the bouquet. What you do not want is browning on the inner petals or a grey, mouldy tinge at the base of the head.
Head size is another sign. Large-headed varieties from high-altitude farms open to blooms of 6 to 8 centimetres across and keep a neat goblet shape for several days before they open fully. Popular varieties and colours
Red remains the bestseller. Varieties such as Explorer and Freedom are known for deep red, velvety petals and long stems, and they are the classic choice for a romantic bouquet of 25, 51 or 101 roses. Freedom has a slightly brighter, cherry-red tone; Explorer is darker and closer to burgundy.
Among white roses, Playa Blanca and Mondial are widely grown: Mondial has a creamy white bloom with many petals and a hint of green at the base, ideal for weddings. Pink lovers will meet varieties like Pink Mondial, Sweetness and Hermosa in shades from blush to soft lilac-pink. Bright yellow and orange roses such as Brighton and Orange Crush bring energy to birthday bouquets.
Ecuador is also known for novelty colours. Bicolour roses with petals edged in a contrasting shade, roses with a vintage dusty tone, and dyed rainbow roses all come from the same farms. Dyed roses are created by feeding the stem coloured water; they are fun for a teenager's birthday but less elegant for a formal occasion.
Meaning of rose colours when you give them
Colour carries as much meaning as the number of stems. Deep red roses speak of passion and love, so keep them for a partner rather than a colleague. Pink roses express tenderness, gratitude and admiration and suit mothers, sisters, friends and teachers. White roses stand for purity and new beginnings and are the classic wedding flower, but in Russia white is also appropriate for a young girl's birthday or a graduation.
Yellow roses are cheerful and work well for friends, though in Russian folk belief yellow is sometimes linked to separation, so some older recipients may hesitate. Orange and coral shades mean enthusiasm and warmth and are a safe, bright choice for birthdays. Burgundy, nearly black roses look dramatic and luxurious, while cream and peach tones give a soft, romantic look that rarely goes wrong.
How to make roses last in a vase
Long-stemmed roses are tough, but they still need the right start. Before putting them in water, cut 2 to 3 centimetres off each stem at a sharp angle with a clean knife, ideally under running water so that no air bubble blocks the stem. Remove every leaf that would sit below the water line, because submerged leaves rot and feed bacteria.
Use a tall, clean vase and cool water. If the bouquet came with a sachet of flower food, add it; if not, simply change the water every day or two. Each time you change the water, trim the stems again by a centimetre. Keep the vase away from radiators, direct sun and draughts, and do not place it next to a fruit bowl: ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up petal drop.
If a rose head starts to droop early, the stem has usually taken in air. Recut the stem under water, wrap the head and stem tightly in paper and stand it in deep, cool water for an hour or two. Most roses revive. With good care, high-quality roses typically stay fresh for one to two weeks, and the largest varieties open slowly over that time.

Frequently asked questions
Why are roses from Ecuador so well known?
They grow at high altitude on the equator, where intense year-round light and cool nights produce long, straight stems, large heads and deep colours. Slow growth also gives denser petals that hold up well after cutting.
How long do Ecuadorian roses last?
With fresh water, regular stem trimming and a cool spot away from radiators and fruit, high-quality roses usually stay fresh for one to two weeks.
What other flowers does Ecuador grow?
Besides roses, the country grows spray roses, carnations, gypsophila, alstroemeria and various summer flowers. Roses remain by far the best-known export.
Are rainbow roses natural?
No. Rainbow roses are white roses whose stems are split and fed with coloured water, so the petals absorb different dyes. Bicolour varieties with naturally edged petals do exist, though.
Can I choose a specific rose colour when ordering flowers to Russia?
Yes. Choose a bouquet in the catalogue and, if you want a particular colour or stem length, contact our manager on WhatsApp to agree the details before delivery.
