Flowers Overnight: How to Get Them There by Morning and Keep Them Fresh

If you want flowers to arrive "overnight", the practical answer is to order the evening before and book the earliest morning slot: with us that means a pre-order for the 09-12 window or an exact morning time, so the bouquet is in the recipient's hands when their day starts. If you already have the flowers and need them to survive until tomorrow, keep them cool, out of the sun and with freshly cut stems in clean water, and they will look as good in the morning as when you bought them.

People type "flowers overnight" for both reasons, so this guide covers both. The first half is about timing: how to plan a delivery that lands first thing in the morning, especially when you are ordering from another time zone. The second half is florist's care: what actually happens to cut flowers during a night in a warm flat, and the simple steps that stop them from drooping before the moment you hand them over.

Why we deliver by morning rather than in the middle of the night

A bouquet that turns up at three in the morning is rarely a pleasant surprise. Nobody answers the door, the doorman is asleep and the courier cannot leave flowers on a doorstep in a Russian winter. So when customers ask for "overnight delivery", what they almost always mean is that the flowers should be there when the person wakes up, and that is how we plan it.

Our delivery windows run from 09-12 through 12-15 and 15-18 to 18-21. For a morning surprise, book the 09-12 window, or choose an exact time, which we keep to within about 30 minutes either way. If the recipient leaves for work early, the start of the morning window may already be too late, so consider sending the flowers to their workplace instead, where they will be on the desk by mid-morning.

If you remember too late in the day and the morning is already gone, there is still the express option in large cities: delivery 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed. That is the real-world equivalent of "overnight" for urgent occasions: you order, and the flowers arrive while the day is still young.

Ordering the evening before from another time zone

Most of our readers order from abroad, and time zones are where morning deliveries go wrong. Moscow and St Petersburg are three hours ahead of GMT all year, and Siberian and Far Eastern cities are further ahead still. When it is your evening in New York, it is already the early hours of the next morning in Moscow. Always work out the date and time in the recipient's city, not yours, and write it in the order comment to be safe.

The safest plan is a pre-order. You can book delivery from 1 to 30 days ahead, so for a birthday, an anniversary or the first morning after someone moves into a new flat, place the order a day or more in advance and pick the 09-12 window. That gives the manager time to confirm the address, call you back if something is unclear and prepare the bouquet calmly.

Write to a manager on WhatsApp if you want to agree the details in your own working hours: the exact morning time, the entrance code, the card text and a photo of the finished bouquet before it goes out. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, which in the morning doubles as a gentle wake-up call.

What happens to cut flowers during one night

Cut flowers keep living after they leave the plant. They breathe, lose water through their leaves and petals, and slowly use up the sugar stored in their stems. Warmth speeds all of this up. A bouquet left overnight on a kitchen counter at 24 degrees, next to a radiator, loses noticeably more water than one kept at 10-15 degrees, and in the morning it shows: soft rose heads, bent tulips, curled leaves.

The other enemy is air in the stems. When a stem is out of water even for twenty minutes, the cut end dries and an air bubble forms inside, blocking the flow of water. The flower then wilts in a vase full of water, which puzzles many people. This is why the fresh cut before putting flowers away for the night matters more than any additive.

Finally there is ethylene, the ripening gas given off by fruit. A bouquet stored overnight next to a bowl of bananas or apples ages faster, and carnations, alstroemeria and lisianthus are especially sensitive to it. Keep fruit and flowers in different rooms.

How to keep flowers fresh overnight before you give them

Unwrap the bouquet, or at least open the wrapping at the bottom, so the stems are not sitting in a sealed bag. Fill a clean bucket or vase with cool water, cut 2-3 cm off each stem at an angle with a sharp knife, and put the stems straight into the water. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline, because they rot quickly and cloud the water.

Then choose the coolest spot in the home: a cold hallway, a glazed balcony in autumn or spring when it is above freezing, or an unheated room. Keep the flowers away from radiators, direct sun and draughts from an open window in winter. If you want the detail on whether a fridge is a good idea, we have a separate piece: can you put flowers in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, take the flowers out about an hour before you give them, give the stems another short cut, dry the ends and rewrap. Roses that are still tight after the night will open a little in a warm room within a few hours, which often makes the bouquet look better than the evening before.

Which flowers handle a night best, and which do not

Some flowers barely notice a night out of the shop. Chrysanthemums, carnations, alstroemeria, spray roses and orchids such as cymbidium are tough and forgiving; give them water and a cool corner and they are fine. Standard roses do well too if the stems are recut, and eucalyptus, pistachio and ruscus greenery hardly change at all.

Others need more care. Hydrangeas drink enormous amounts of water and wilt fast in warm air, so keep their heads away from heat and make sure the stems are deep in water. Tulips keep growing in the vase and bend towards the light, which can change the shape of an arrangement by morning. Peonies open quickly in warmth, so if you want them closed for the moment of giving, a cool room is essential.

Arrangements in floral foam or a box with a water reservoir are the easiest to keep overnight: they already have water at the stems. Just top the foam up with water in the evening, pouring slowly so it soaks in, and keep the box somewhere cool.

When it is simpler to have flowers delivered in the morning

If the person is in another city or country, keeping a bouquet fresh overnight is not your problem at all: book the morning delivery and the flowers travel only once, from our florists to the door, on the day itself. That is also kinder to the flowers than a long journey in a car or a night in a hotel room.

We deliver across Russia. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for suburbs and remote districts the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. Payment is online on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay, and a card with your text is included free. Delivery is anonymous unless you sign the card, so a morning surprise can stay a mystery if you wish.

Choose a bouquet in the bouquets catalogue, select the date and the morning window, and check the full conditions on the delivery and payment page. If the recipient is not at home when the courier calls, we agree a second delivery the same day or hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge, but only with your consent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get flowers delivered overnight in Russia?

We do not deliver in the middle of the night, but you can pre-order for the 09-12 window or an exact morning time so the flowers arrive when the day starts. In large cities express delivery takes 1-2 hours after confirmation.

How far ahead can I book a morning delivery?

You can pre-order from 1 to 30 days ahead. Ordering at least the day before is the most reliable way to get the earliest morning slot.

Will flowers survive overnight without a fridge?

Yes, if you recut the stems, put them in fresh cool water and keep them in the coolest room, away from radiators, sun and fruit. Most bouquets look just as good in the morning.

Should I take the wrapping off flowers overnight?

At least open it at the bottom so the stems can sit in water and air can circulate. Rewrap them in the morning shortly before giving the bouquet.

How do I time a morning delivery from abroad?

Work out the date and time in the recipient's city, not your own, and note it in the order comment. A manager on WhatsApp can confirm the window with you in your own working hours.
