Helium Balloons: Float Times, Care and Pairing Them with Flowers

Helium balloons are balloons filled with helium, a gas lighter than air, so they rise and float instead of resting on the floor. A standard 11-inch latex balloon usually floats for about 12 to 20 hours, while a foil (Mylar) balloon can stay up for several days and often a week or more. How long yours actually lasts depends on the material, the size, the temperature of the room and whether the latex was treated before inflation.

Below we explain, as florists who prepare a lot of celebration orders, how to choose between latex and foil, why balloons sag on a frosty Russian street and recover indoors, how to keep them safe around children and pets, and how to make balloons and a bouquet work together rather than compete. If the balloons are for someone in Russia, you will also find practical notes on timing a flower delivery so the whole surprise lands on the same day.

Latex or foil: which helium balloon lasts longer

Latex is porous at a microscopic level. Helium atoms are tiny, so they slowly escape through the rubber, and an untreated latex balloon begins to look soft by the next morning. Smaller latex balloons (5 to 9 inches) lose lift even faster, sometimes within six to eight hours, because they hold less gas relative to their surface. If you need latex balloons to look full at a party the next evening, ask whoever inflates them to use a liquid sealing treatment inside the balloon; it typically stretches float time to two or three days.

Foil balloons are made of metallised nylon film, which is far less permeable. A good-quality foil heart, star or number balloon will often float for five to seven days and can last two weeks or longer in a cool, still room. They are also reusable in a modest way: when one finally sinks, it can be refilled through its self-sealing valve.

Our practical rule: latex for volume and colour at a single event, foil for a gift that should still look good a few days later. A bunch of three to five latex balloons tied around one large foil shape gives you both: the colourful cloud for the photos and a centrepiece that outlives the party.

Why helium balloons droop in the cold and recover in the warmth

Gas contracts as it cools. Carry a full helium balloon out into a Russian winter at minus fifteen and within minutes it looks wrinkled and half-empty, and foil balloons can even fold over. Nothing has leaked: bring it back into a warm room and in twenty or thirty minutes it will fill out again. The same effect means a balloon inflated to its limit in a cold hallway can pop once it reaches a hot living room, so a slight softness at inflation is safer than drum-tight.

Direct sun and radiators work the other way. Heat expands the gas and stretches latex, which speeds up leakage and fading, and dark foil balloons near a sunny window can burst. Keep balloons away from heaters, ceiling lamps that get hot, and air-conditioning vents, which also make them spin and tangle.

If you are planning a surprise in winter, have balloons travel the shortest possible distance outside, in a closed car rather than by hand, and expect them to need a little time indoors before they look their best. Flowers have a similar need: a bouquet brought in from the frost should rest in its wrapping for a few minutes before you unwrap it, so the petals do not suffer a sudden temperature shock.

Safety: helium, children, pets and the sky

Helium itself is not poisonous, but inhaling it from a balloon to get a squeaky voice replaces the oxygen in your lungs and can cause dizziness or fainting, and inhaling straight from a pressurised cylinder is dangerous. It is a party trick worth discouraging, especially with children watching.

Burst latex is a choking hazard for small children, so collect fragments straight away and never let a toddler chew on a deflated balloon. Ribbons longer than about a metre are a strangling risk for babies and a temptation for cats. Weight every bunch so it cannot drift to the ceiling and drag its ribbons through the room, and cut the ribbons shorter if there is a crawling child in the house.

Do not release balloons outdoors. Latex fragments and ribbons end up in fields and rivers, where birds and animals swallow them, and foil balloons that drift into power lines can cause short circuits and outages. When the celebration is over, pop the balloons, cut the ribbons and put everything in the household rubbish.

Balloons and flowers together: making the pair look intentional

Balloons and a bouquet tell the same story in two voices, so match them. Choose one or two colours from the flowers and repeat them in the balloons: soft pink and white peonies or roses with blush and pearl latex, sunflowers with yellow and white, deep red roses with a single red or gold foil heart. A rainbow of balloons next to a delicate pastel bouquet makes the flowers look faded.

Keep them physically apart. Balloon ribbons tied around a bouquet crush stems and wrapping, and a bunch pulling upward can tip a vase. Tie the balloons to their own weight and put the vase on a stable surface a little away from them. Never let latex sit in vase water: it softens and the dye can leach out.

Flowers also outlast most balloons, which is a good reason to choose the bouquet carefully. Roses, chrysanthemums and alstroemeria will stay fresh for a week or longer with clean water and a fresh cut every two days, long after the latex has sunk. If colour meaning matters to the recipient, for example in Russia, where yellow carries an old association with parting, pick the shade first and build the balloons around it.

When balloons are part of a celebration in Russia

In Russia balloons are a fixture of a few specific occasions. Birthdays, especially round-number ones and children's parties, are the obvious one. Another is the day a mother and newborn come home from the maternity hospital, when the family greets them with blue or pink balloons and a bouquet for the mother. Graduations and the first day of school on 1 September also bring out balloons, usually alongside flowers for the teacher.

Some traditions are worth knowing before you plan a surprise from abroad. Bouquets for celebrations are given with an odd number of stems when there are fewer than about a dozen, because even numbers are associated with funerals; balloons follow no such rule. Balloons are not appropriate for condolences or a visit to a grave, where flowers alone are expected. And for an older recipient, a generous bouquet usually means more than a bunch of balloons, which many grandparents see as something for children.

Sending flowers to Russia for the same day as the balloons

If relatives in Russia are organising the balloons, the easiest way to be part of the moment from abroad is to send flowers that arrive the same day. You can choose a bouquet in our bouquets catalogue and pay online by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order.

Timing is what makes it work. In large cities express delivery takes 1 to 2 hours after the order is confirmed, or you can choose an exact time (plus or minus 30 minutes), a window of 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21, or pre-order 1 to 30 days ahead, which is the calm option for a birthday or a hospital homecoming you know about in advance. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, and delivery is anonymous by default, so you can keep the surprise. A card with your text is free.

To agree the time, the address and the words on the card, or to see a photo of the bouquet before it leaves, message our manager on WhatsApp. Full conditions are on the delivery and payment page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a helium balloon float?

An untreated 11-inch latex balloon usually floats for 12 to 20 hours, smaller ones less. Foil balloons often float for five to seven days, and in a cool, still room they can last two weeks or longer.

Why did my helium balloon shrink outside?

Cold makes the helium contract, so balloons look deflated in frost. Bring them into a warm room and they fill out again within about half an hour, as long as they have not actually leaked.

Can I put a helium balloon in a flower arrangement?

It is better to keep them separate. Ribbons crush stems and a balloon pulling upward can tip the vase; tie balloons to their own weight next to the flowers instead.

Is it safe to inhale helium from a balloon?

It is not a good idea. Helium displaces oxygen in the lungs and can cause dizziness or fainting, and breathing straight from a cylinder is dangerous.

Can I send flowers to Russia to arrive with someone's party balloons?

Yes. You can pre-order a bouquet 1 to 30 days ahead or pick an exact delivery time or time window, so the flowers arrive on the day of the celebration.
