How to Transport Floral Arrangements Without Spills or Crushed Blooms

To transport floral arrangements, keep each container upright in a snug, supported box and secure the box against sliding. Protect the flowers from direct sun, strong airflow and pressure, and keep the journey as short as practical. Before lifting anything, check that the vessel is sound and that water cannot easily splash over its rim.
The safest packing depends on what holds the flowers: a water-filled vase, wet floral foam or a tied bouquet. A tall centrepiece needs support around its container; a hand-tied bouquet needs space around its flower heads. Start with the arrangement’s shape and weight, then choose a position in the vehicle where it can remain stable throughout the trip.
Check the arrangement before you pack it
Place the arrangement on a level surface and inspect the base, handle and any decorative attachments. Look for a cracked vessel, loose liner or stem that could catch on clothing. If flowers sit in a basket, check whether it contains a separate waterproof liner: the basket itself may not hold water. Carry the weight from underneath, even when a handle looks sturdy.
Identify the tallest, widest and most delicate parts before choosing a box. Leave clearance around projecting flowers, foliage and branches so they will not brush the sides. Support should hold the container steady below the flowers. Do not tighten wrapping around the entire display to make it fit; pressure can crease petals and change the arrangement’s shape.
For a bouquet travelling without a vase, keep its tie in place and protect any existing stem-end water packaging from punctures. Do not assume damp wrapping will sustain flowers through a long journey. Plan access to a clean vase and water at the destination, and keep the bouquet away from luggage that could press against the flower heads.
Pack the container so it cannot tip or leak
Choose a rigid box with a flat bottom, then fill the gaps around the lower part of the container with folded towels or firmly crumpled paper. Test the fit with a gentle nudge before lifting. The vessel should stay upright without being squeezed. A soft bag alone offers little protection against tipping, particularly when a vase is tall or narrow.
For flowers standing in water, reduce an unnecessarily high water level enough to limit splashing while keeping the cut ends submerged. Keep clean water available to restore the level on arrival. Place absorbent material beneath the vase and protect the vehicle surface, but treat this as backup: towels cannot compensate for a container that rocks or slides.
For an arrangement in floral foam, keep the base level and check that its tray or liner is intact. If the foam needs water, add it slowly into the container and allow excess to settle before packing. Do not pull stems out to make the display shorter; reinserting them can loosen their hold. Move a very tall or elaborate piece only after checking how it is constructed.
Bouquets we can deliver
Choose a stable position in the car
A clear, level footwell can suit a small boxed arrangement if the box fits securely and stays away from pedals, seat rails and passengers’ feet. For larger pieces, use a flat load area with enough height and suitable restraints. Never put flowers in the driver’s footwell or let an arrangement obstruct the driver’s view, mirrors or controls.
Avoid placing a tall vase directly on a sloping seat. A seat belt around the vessel may leave it free to tilt, or put pressure on fragile glass and stems. Secure the supporting box using the vehicle’s appropriate restraints, with pressure kept below the blooms. If you cannot restrain a heavy container safely, change the packing or use a more suitable vehicle.
Load flowers after other luggage and leave their space clear. Drive with gentle acceleration, braking and cornering, and choose a straightforward route where possible. A passenger can notice movement, but should not be the only thing keeping a heavy arrangement upright. For more positioning advice, see our guide to transporting flowers by car.
Protect flowers from weather and unnecessary delays
Bring the vehicle interior to a comfortable temperature before loading. Keep flowers out of direct sunlight and away from heater outlets or strong air-conditioning jets. Avoid leaving the arrangement in a parked vehicle while you run errands: conditions inside can change quickly. A dark boot is not automatically a suitable space if it becomes hot or lacks adequate clearance.
In cold weather, use loose protective wrapping for the short transfer between the building and the car, leaving room around the flower heads. Keep the container upright while wrapping it, and remove the outer protection indoors. Flowers differ in their sensitivity to cold, so do not rely on a single temperature rule or assume a brief outdoor wait is harmless.
Before setting off, confirm who will receive the flowers and whether you can reach the entrance without waiting outside. For an event, check access, unloading space and where the arrangement will stand. Allow time to unpack and inspect it before guests arrive. A simple handover plan often protects a display better than adding more layers of packaging.
Unpack carefully and restore water on arrival
Carry the box with both hands supporting its base, keeping it level through doorways and on stairs. Put it on a stable surface before removing the packing. Lift the arrangement by its container rather than by the stems, flower heads or basket trim. Check for damp packing, shifted supports or a small leak before placing it on furniture.
For a bouquet going into a vase, use a clean container, remove leaves that would sit below the waterline and recut the stem ends with a clean, sharp tool. Add flower food according to its packet directions if supplied. For an existing vase arrangement, restore water lost during travel without disturbing the design; make sure the stem ends remain in water.
With floral foam, check moisture regularly and add water carefully to the base as needed. Avoid pouring over the flowers or overflowing the liner. Display the arrangement away from direct sun, heaters and ripening fruit, and remove damaged or fading material gently. If a stem has shifted, inspect its support before moving it; repeated adjustments can make the display less secure.
Send flowers in Russia when personal transport is impractical
If you are abroad and want flowers to reach someone in Russia, ordering delivery can remove the need for a friend or relative to carry an arrangement. You can start with our bouquets catalogue. Turboflora delivers flowers across Russia. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the price when confirming your order.
Express delivery in large cities is available in 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed. You can also arrange an exact time with a tolerance of ±30 minutes, choose a 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 or 18–21 window, or pre-order 1–30 days ahead. Contact a manager on WhatsApp for help choosing a bouquet, agreeing the time, address and card text, or a photo of the bouquet before delivery.
Delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender, so include your name in the free card if you want it known. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival. If they are absent, we agree a second delivery that day or a handover to a neighbour or concierge with the sender’s consent. Online checkout uses CloudPayments; check the displayed payment options rather than assuming every foreign card will work. See delivery and payment for ordering information.
Frequently asked questions
Can I transport a floral arrangement lying on its side?
Keep arrangements in vases, baskets or floral foam upright to reduce leaks and movement within the design. A tied bouquet can rest horizontally if its flower heads have clear space and its stem-end packaging cannot leak.
Should I remove all the water from a vase before driving?
Keep the cut stem ends submerged and lower an excessive water level enough to reduce splashing. Stabilise the vase in a supported box and restore the water level at your destination.
How do I transport a tall floral centrepiece?
Check its construction, available vehicle height and the weight of its base before moving it. Use support around the container and appropriate restraints; if it cannot travel securely, ask the person who made it how it should be moved.
How long can floral arrangements stay in a car?
There is no reliable universal limit because the flowers, water supply and conditions inside the vehicle vary. Keep the journey short, avoid stops in a parked car and unpack promptly on arrival.
Can I order flowers for someone in Russia while I am abroad?
You can order flowers for delivery across Russia and contact a manager to agree the recipient’s address, timing and card text. Payment at online checkout uses CloudPayments; check the options shown there for your card.
