Red Carnations: What They Mean, How to Care for Them and When to Give Them

Red carnations are a symbol of deep love, admiration and respect, and they are among the longest-lasting cut flowers you can buy: with basic care they stay fresh in a vase for two to three weeks. Dark red stems lean towards romance and devotion, while bright red carnations carry a sense of honour and remembrance, which is why they appear both in Valentine's bouquets and at memorial ceremonies.

Below, I will explain what red carnations say in different situations, how they are read in Russia (where the rules are a little different from Western Europe or the US), how to keep them looking fresh for as long as possible, and how to arrange delivery if the person you want to surprise lives in Russia and you do not.

What red carnations mean

The carnation, Dianthus caryophyllus, has been cultivated for over two thousand years, and the colour of the bloom does most of the talking. Red is the strongest message in the carnation palette. A deep, almost burgundy red says 'my heart aches for you' in the old Victorian flower language, while a clear scarlet expresses admiration and pride. Pink carnations are linked to gratitude and a mother's love, white to purity and good luck, and striped varieties traditionally meant a refusal, so it is worth checking the colour before you order.

In practice, most people today read a red carnation bouquet as warm, sincere and a little old-fashioned in a good way. It feels less theatrical than a large armful of red roses and more personal than a mixed seasonal bouquet. That makes red carnations a good choice when you want to show deep affection to a parent, a long-term partner or an old friend without the gesture looking like a formal proposal.

Carnations also have a strong civic meaning. In many countries, the red carnation was the flower of the labour movement and of public celebrations, and in Portugal it gave its name to the 1974 revolution. That history is why the same flower can look festive at a parade and solemn at a monument.

Red carnations in Russia: the etiquette you should know

If you are sending flowers to Russia, it helps to know that red carnations are closely associated with Victory Day on 9 May and with laying flowers at war memorials. Many people bring two or four red carnations to an eternal flame or a veterans' monument, and an even number of stems in Russia is reserved for funerals and remembrance. We have written about this tradition in more detail in Victory Day Carnations: Why Red Flowers Dominate on May 9.

For a living person, therefore, a bouquet should always contain an odd number of stems: 5, 7, 9, 11, 15 and so on. Florists in Russia usually stop counting after about fifteen stems, because in a large bouquet nobody counts individual flowers, but for a small posy of carnations the rule matters, and older relatives will notice.

Older generations may also associate a small bunch of red carnations with Soviet-era official gifts for teachers, veterans and colleagues. This is not negative, but it can feel formal. To avoid that, choose a fuller bouquet, mix red carnations with greenery or with other flowers, or go for spray carnations, which have several smaller blooms on each stem and look softer and more modern. Younger Russians increasingly treat carnations as a stylish, durable flower rather than a relic, a shift we covered in Carnations in Russia: Old-Fashioned or Back in Style?.

When red carnations are the right gift

Red carnations work best when you want the message to be heartfelt rather than flashy. They are a natural choice for a mother's or grandmother's birthday, a wedding anniversary after many years together, a thank-you to a mentor, or a gesture of support to a friend going through a hard time. Because they last so long, the recipient enjoys them for weeks, which turns a single delivery into a long reminder of you.

They are also the classic flower for 23 February (Defender of the Fatherland Day) and 9 May in Russia, when they are given to veterans, fathers and grandfathers. On 8 March, International Women's Day, red carnations are less common than tulips or mimosa, but a generous bouquet of them is still a respectful, warm choice for older women.

If your message is purely romantic and the occasion is a first date or an early relationship, red roses usually say it more directly. We compared the two in Red Roses in Russia: What They Actually Signal. Red carnations shine when the love is established and you want to say 'I am still here, and I still care'.

How to keep red carnations fresh for two to three weeks

Carnations are tough, but a few minutes of care makes a real difference. When the bouquet arrives, remove the packaging and recut each stem at a sharp angle about 2 cm from the bottom, ideally just above or below a node (the swollen joint on the stem), because water is absorbed well there. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline; leaves in water rot quickly and feed bacteria.

Use a clean vase filled with cool water to about two thirds of the height of the stems. Carnations are sensitive to ethylene, the gas released by ripening fruit, so keep the vase away from the fruit bowl, as well as from radiators, direct sun and draughts. Change the water every two days and give the stems a fresh small cut each time. If there is a sachet of flower food, use it; if not, clean water changed regularly is more important than any home remedy.

Healthy red carnations open gradually: tight buds at the top of a spray stem will bloom over the following days. When the edges of a petal start to brown or the head droops, remove that bloom and the rest of the bouquet will keep going. A dark red bloom that looks slightly crumpled at the tips is normal for many varieties and is not a sign of wilting.

Choosing a red carnation bouquet

Standard carnations have one large, ruffled flower per stem and give a clean, classic look. Spray carnations carry three to five smaller flowers on each stem and create a fuller, garden-like bouquet with fewer stems. For a romantic gift, a dense dome of deep red standard carnations looks elegant and modern. For a family occasion, red spray carnations mixed with white or cream flowers and soft greenery feel warmer and less formal.

Think about where the flowers will stand. A tall, open bouquet suits a living room table; a compact round bouquet is better for a small flat, an office desk or a hospital room. If you are unsure which style the recipient would like, ask for advice before ordering rather than guessing from a photo.

Sending red carnations to someone in Russia

You can also choose an exact time (plus or minus 30 minutes), one of the time windows (09-12, 12-15, 15-18, 18-21), or pre-order 1-30 days ahead, which is useful for 9 May, birthdays and anniversaries. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival. If nobody is home, we agree a second delivery the same day or hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge, but only with your consent. To agree the card text, the stem count or the time, or to see a photo of the bouquet before it goes out, write to our manager on WhatsApp. We deliver bouquets across Russia in 1–2 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What do red carnations symbolise?

Red carnations symbolise deep love, admiration and respect. Dark red leans towards romantic devotion, while brighter red expresses pride and honour, which is why the flower is also used for remembrance.

How long do red carnations last in a vase?

With fresh cuts, clean water changed every two days and a cool spot away from fruit and radiators, red carnations usually last two to three weeks. Spray carnations keep producing new blooms as the buds open.

Is it appropriate to give red carnations to a woman in Russia?

Yes, especially to a mother, grandmother or partner, as long as the bouquet has an odd number of stems. A fuller bouquet or one mixed with other flowers feels less formal than a small bunch.

Why do Russians bring red carnations on 9 May?

Red carnations are the traditional flower for honouring veterans and the fallen on Victory Day. At memorials people lay an even number of stems, while veterans themselves receive bouquets with an odd number.

Can I send red carnations anonymously to Russia?

Yes. Our delivery is anonymous by default and the courier does not name the sender. You can add a free card with your own text or sign it only if you want to.
