What "Attempted Delivery Abroad" Means and What to Do Next
"Attempted delivery abroad" is a tracking status that means your item has already reached the destination country and the courier or postal service there tried to hand it over, but could not. Usually nobody was home, the address was incomplete, or the recipient could not be reached by phone. The item is not lost: it is normally held for a second attempt or waiting at a pickup point, and the next step depends on what the local carrier left behind.
We deliver flowers, not parcels, so we see this problem from the other side every day: a bouquet that arrives at a closed door is a gift that never happened. Below we explain what the status really means, why attempts fail, what you and the recipient can do, and how we avoid failed handovers when you send flowers to someone in Russia or in another country.
What the status actually tells you
International tracking is a relay. Your sender's postal service or courier carries the item to the border, customs releases it, and then a carrier inside the destination country takes over the last mile. "Attempted delivery abroad" is the scan that this final carrier records when the driver or postman reaches the address and cannot complete the handover. In other words, the international part of the journey is finished; only the doorstep is left.
The wording is often a direct translation of a local status, which is why it sounds vague. Some systems add a reason code such as "addressee absent", "address incomplete" or "refused", while others show only the bare phrase. If your tracking page has a link to the destination carrier, open it: the local site usually gives more detail, including where the item is now and how long it will be kept.
What the status does not mean: it does not mean the item was returned, damaged or stopped by customs. Customs problems have their own statuses. A failed attempt is purely a last-mile issue, and most of the time it is solved within a few days.
The most common reasons a delivery attempt fails
The first reason is simple absence. Couriers work in daytime slots, and a recipient who is at work, at the dacha or on a short trip will miss them. In apartment buildings a closed entrance door or a broken intercom has the same effect, even if the person is upstairs.
The second reason is the address. International labels are often written in Latin letters, while the local driver reads the street name in the local alphabet. A missing apartment number, entrance number or floor, or a street that exists in two districts of the same city, is enough to stop a handover. The third reason is the phone: if the recipient's number is missing, has the wrong country code or is switched off, the courier cannot call ahead or ask for directions.
Less often the item is refused, for example because a fee is due on delivery, or the recipient simply does not recognise the sender's name. With gifts this happens more than people expect, especially when the parcel is a surprise.

What to do after a failed attempt
Start with the destination carrier's tracking page and look for three things: whether a second attempt is scheduled, whether the item has been moved to a pickup point, and how many days it will be held there. Holding periods are limited, and once they run out the item may travel back to the sender, which takes weeks.
Then contact the recipient directly. Ask them to check the door or mailbox for a notice, confirm the full address including apartment and entrance numbers, and keep their phone switched on. If the carrier allows it, the recipient can often rebook the delivery or choose pickup themselves, which is usually faster than anything you can arrange from abroad.
If you are the sender and the address was wrong, contact the carrier you used in your own country and ask whether the address can be corrected before the item is returned. Keep the tracking number and any reference codes to hand; you will be asked for them at every step.
Why flowers cannot wait for a second attempt
A parcel can sit at a post office for a week. Cut flowers cannot. A bouquet that spends a day in a warm depot or a cold van loses water, petals start to soften, and by the third day a rose or a tulip arrangement looks tired even if it is put straight into a vase. That is why flower delivery works on a different principle: the handover has to succeed on the same day.
For the same reason, timing matters more than with parcels. A morning slot is kinder to the flowers than a late evening one, and a delivery on a working day is more likely to find someone at home if you choose a time when the recipient is usually back. If the person lives with family, delivering to whoever answers the door is often the best plan.
How we prevent failed deliveries when you send flowers
When you order with us, the courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so the person has time to come down, open the entrance or tell the driver where to go. If the recipient is not there, we agree a second delivery the same day, or, with your consent as the sender, hand the bouquet to a neighbour or the concierge. Nothing goes back to a depot for days.
You can choose the time. In large Russian cities we deliver within 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed, or at an exact time (plus or minus 30 minutes), or in a window such as 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21. You can also pre-order 1-30 days ahead, which is useful for birthdays and anniversaries. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. The details are on the Delivery and payment page.
Delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender, and a card with your text is free. If you would like the surprise to stay a surprise but worry about the address, write to a manager on WhatsApp to agree the time, the address and the card text, and ask for a photo of the bouquet before it leaves.
Sending flowers to another country with us
We also deliver flowers abroad: 53 countries and more than 1630 cities, including the USA, the United Kingdom, Poland, France, Spain, Egypt, Germany and Canada. Every country and city is listed on the Flower delivery abroad page (the page is in Russian, but country names are easy to find).
The order is placed the same way as in Russia: choose a bouquet on the country or city page, enter the address and the card text, and pay online in rubles. The price is already converted to rubles and already includes delivery. Payment on the site works by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. Note that the 500 RUB fee and the express and time-window options apply to Russian cities.
To avoid an "attempted delivery" with flowers abroad, give the full address in the form the recipient uses, add the apartment or house number, and always include a phone number with the correct country code. Those three details solve almost every failed handover before it happens.
Frequently asked questions
Does "attempted delivery abroad" mean my item is lost?
No. It means the item reached the destination country and the local carrier tried to hand it over but failed. It is usually held for another attempt or at a pickup point.
How long will the item be kept after a failed attempt?
That depends on the carrier in the destination country, and holding periods are limited. Check the local carrier's tracking page as soon as you see the status, because after the deadline the item may be returned to the sender.
What happens if the recipient is out when your courier brings flowers?
The courier calls about 15 minutes before arrival. If the recipient is not there, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with the sender's consent, hand the bouquet to a neighbour or concierge.
Will the recipient know who sent the flowers?
Not unless you want them to. Delivery is anonymous by default and the courier does not name the sender; you can sign the free card or leave it unsigned.
How do I pay for flowers sent abroad?
You pay online on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. For orders abroad the price is shown in rubles and already includes delivery.
