Will Flowers Be Okay in a Car Overnight?
Flowers will usually be okay in a car overnight if the night is cool but stays above freezing, roughly between 2 and 10 C, and the stems have water. In a frosty night they can freeze and turn to mush by morning, and after a hot day the trapped heat makes them wilt fast. So the honest answer is: in mild autumn or spring weather, often yes; in winter frost or summer heat, bring them inside.
A closed car is a small box that follows the outside temperature with a delay and amplifies the extremes. Below I explain what actually happens to cut flowers in a parked car at night, which flowers cope and which do not, how to prepare a bouquet if you have no choice, and how to judge in the morning whether it can still be given as a gift.
What happens to cut flowers in a parked car at night
Cut flowers are still alive: they drink, breathe and lose water through their petals and leaves. Cool air slows all of that down, which is why florists store flowers in refrigerated rooms at about 2-5 C. A car parked on a cool night can, by chance, give a bouquet similar conditions, and some flowers look even fresher in the morning than they did in a warm flat.
The trouble begins at the edges. Once the air in the car drops below zero, water inside petals freezes and ruptures the cells. You will not notice it at night; you will see it in the morning when the flowers warm up and the petals go dark, translucent and limp, like lettuce that has been in the freezer. That damage cannot be reversed.
On the warm side, a car that stood in the sun all afternoon can stay hot well into the evening. Heat speeds up water loss, and a bouquet without a water source will droop within hours. Even with water, warmth shortens vase life, because flowers open and age faster.
A quick guide by season
Autumn and spring nights between 3 and 12 C are the friendliest. A bouquet in an aqua box or with wrapped wet stems will usually be fine until morning. Check the forecast for the lowest temperature, not the evening one, because the coldest hour is just before dawn.
Winter is the real risk. In much of Russia nights drop well below zero from November to March, and an unheated car offers no protection. Even a short frost can kill tropical flowers and damage roses and tulips. In winter, treat "overnight in the car" as a no, whatever the wrapping.
Summer nights are usually mild, but the car itself may still be hot from the day. Open the windows for a few minutes before leaving the flowers, park in the shade if you can, and make sure the stems are in water. If the night stays above 20 C, take the bouquet inside: it will last longer on a cool floor than in a warm car. For shorter stops, see Can Flowers Stay in the Car for a Few Hours? Temperature Guide.

Which flowers cope and which do not
Hardy flowers that tolerate cool nights well: chrysanthemums, carnations, alstroemeria, most roses, eucalyptus and other sturdy greenery. They come from cool growing conditions, have firm petals and lose water slowly. A night at 4-8 C will not hurt them.
Sensitive flowers that should not stay in a car: orchids, anthuriums, gerberas in cold weather, hydrangeas in heat, and any tropical stems. Orchids get cold damage even above freezing, below about 10 C. Hydrangeas drink a lot and collapse quickly in warmth if the water runs out.
Spring bulbs such as tulips and hyacinths like cold but not frost. Tulips also keep growing in the vase and bend towards light, so a night lying flat on a seat can leave the stems curved by morning. Stand them upright in a bag or box so they stay straight.
If you must leave a bouquet in the car
Give the flowers water. An aqua box or a water pack is ideal. If the bouquet has neither, wrap the stem ends in wet paper towels and cover them with a plastic bag tied at the top. Dry stems overnight are the main reason for a sad bouquet in the morning.
Keep it upright and stable. Put the bouquet in a tall bag or a box wedged between seats, or on the floor behind the front seat, which is the most stable and shaded spot. Avoid the parcel shelf and the dashboard: they get the most sun in the morning.
On a borderline night, around 0-3 C, insulation helps a little. Wrap the bouquet loosely in a blanket or a coat, without crushing the heads, and leave it on the floor rather than the seat. This buys an hour or two of margin, not protection against a real frost. More packing tips are in Transporting Flowers by Car Without Crushing the Bouquet.
How to check and revive flowers in the morning
Bring the bouquet into a room that is cool rather than warm, and let it adjust for half an hour before you unwrap it. A sudden move from a cold car to a hot kitchen is harder on flowers than the cold itself.
Look at the petals. Firm, matt petals with normal colour are fine. Dark, glassy or slimy patches mean frost damage; remove those flowers, because they will rot quickly and spoil the water for the rest. Slightly droopy heads after a warm night are usually just thirst.
For thirsty flowers, recut each stem at an angle by 1-2 cm with a sharp knife, remove leaves below the water line and put the bouquet in fresh cool water. Roses that droop at the neck can be revived by wrapping the heads in paper and standing the stems in deep water for one to two hours. If the flowers recover, give them as planned; if half of them are damaged, it is kinder to give a fresh bouquet. The easier way: have the bouquet arrive on the day
Often the car question comes up because someone bought flowers the evening before a visit or a celebration. If the recipient lives in Russia and you are far away, or you simply do not want to keep a bouquet overnight, we can deliver it straight to the person on the day itself.
In large cities we deliver express in 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed, at an exact time (+/-30 minutes), in windows 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21, or pre-ordered 1-30 days ahead. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, and a card with your text is free.
Choose a bouquet in our Bouquets catalogue and pay online by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. If you would like to agree the time, the address or the card text, or see a photo of the bouquet before it goes out, write to our manager on WhatsApp. We deliver bouquets across Russia in 1–2 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can flowers freeze in a car overnight?
Yes. Once the air in the car drops below zero, the water in the petals freezes and the cells burst. Frost-damaged flowers look dark and glassy after warming up and cannot be saved.
Is a cold car good for flowers?
A cool car at about 2-8 C can actually keep flowers fresh, much like a florist's cold room. The risk is the temperature dropping below freezing towards dawn, so always check the overnight low.
What is the best place in the car for a bouquet?
Upright on the floor behind a front seat, wedged so it cannot tip over. It is shaded, stable and away from the windows, which heat up in the sun and chill fastest at night.
Should I take flowers out of the wrapping in the car?
No, keep the wrapping on overnight; it protects the petals from cold air and bumps. Unwrap the bouquet indoors in the morning, after it has adjusted to room temperature.
How long can flowers stay in a car without water?
In cool weather hardy flowers can manage several hours without water, but not a whole night. Always give the stems a water source or wet wrapping before leaving them overnight.
