Buket Roz: A Florist's Guide to Choosing and Sending a Bouquet of Roses
"Buket roz" is simply Russian for "a bouquet of roses", and it is the most ordered gift in Russia for birthdays, anniversaries, apologies and big thank-yous. To get one right you need three decisions: the colour, the number of stems (always odd for a living person) and the timing of delivery. Below we walk you through each one the way we would explain it to a customer at the counter, and show how to send roses to someone in Russia from abroad.
If you live outside Russia and want to surprise your mother, partner or an old friend, a rose bouquet is the safest choice: everyone understands it, it suits almost any age, and it photographs beautifully when the recipient sends you a thank-you picture. The details, though, matter more than many people expect, because Russian flower etiquette has a few firm rules that differ from what is usual in Western Europe or the United States.
What "buket roz" means and why roses dominate Russian gifting
"Buket" is the Russian word for bouquet and "roz" is the genitive plural of "roza", rose. When someone types "buket roz" into a search bar, they usually want one of two things: ideas for what a good rose bouquet looks like, or a way to order one quickly. Both are covered here.
Roses hold a special place in Russia. They are given on 8 March (International Women's Day), on birthdays, at first dates, at graduations and after a concert or school play. A man arriving at a woman's home for dinner with a few roses is considered polite rather than romantic, so do not overthink the gesture: roses read as respect and warmth first, love second, depending on the colour and number.
Because roses are so common, Russians are also quite discerning about them. Recipients notice whether the heads are fresh and firm, whether the stems are long and straight, and whether the bouquet has been put together with care. A modest bouquet of perfect roses always makes a better impression than a huge one of tired flowers.
Odd numbers only: the counting rule you must not break
This is the single most important rule. In Russia, flowers for a living person are given in odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15, 25 and so on. Even numbers are reserved for funerals and memorials. Giving an elderly relative a bouquet of 10 or 12 roses can cause genuine discomfort, so count carefully if you are choosing a ready-made arrangement.
There is one widely accepted exception: very large bouquets of more than about 15 stems, where nobody is expected to count. Still, most florists and most customers in Russia simply stick to odd numbers at every size, and we recommend you do the same, especially when the recipient is older or traditional.
Popular choices each have their own nuance. A single rose is a tender, personal sign of attention. Three roses suit a date or a small thank-you. Five to nine roses make a proper gift for a birthday or a colleague. Fifteen and twenty-five stems feel generous and festive. Fifty-one or one hundred and one roses are the classic grand gesture for a proposal or a milestone anniversary; we explain that tradition in detail in our article on the meaning of 51 roses.

Choosing the colour: what each rose says in Russia
Red roses mean passion and love, and in Russia they are the standard romantic gift. They are perfect for a wife, girlfriend or partner, but can feel a little too intense for a colleague or a teacher. Deep burgundy shades read as mature, serious feeling.
White roses stand for purity, new beginnings and respect. They are often chosen for weddings, for a young woman's birthday, or for congratulating a new mother. Pink roses are the most universal colour of all: gratitude, tenderness and admiration without heavy romantic weight. If you are unsure, pink is almost never wrong, whether for your mother, a friend or your partner's mother.
Yellow roses deserve a short warning. In much of the world they mean friendship and joy, and younger Russians read them that way too, but an older generation still associates yellow flowers with parting or jealousy. For a grandmother, choose pink, peach or cream instead. Peach and cream roses, by the way, have become very fashionable for birthdays and look elegant in photos.
Mixed bouquets of two or three colours are a good way to avoid any unintended message: for example white with pale pink, or cream with peach. They look softer and more natural than a single block of colour.
Short stems, long stems and spray roses
Not all roses look alike. Classic long-stemmed roses with large single heads give a formal, impressive bouquet, ideal for anniversaries and declarations. Medium stems are more practical for an ordinary vase at home and are easy for an older person to arrange.
Spray roses carry several small blooms on each stem, so a bouquet of seven spray roses looks lush and garden-like. They are a lovely choice for a friend, a mother or anyone who prefers a relaxed, cottage style over a strict formal look. How to keep a rose bouquet fresh for longer
Tell your recipient, or include in the card, a couple of simple care steps. Fresh roses usually last about a week in a vase, and good care can stretch that further. First, trim each stem by 2-3 cm at a sharp angle with a clean knife, ideally under running water, so air does not block the stem.
Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, since they rot quickly and cloud the water. Use a clean vase and cool water, fill it about halfway, and change the water every day or two, trimming the stems a little each time.
Keep the bouquet away from radiators, direct sunlight and fruit bowls: ripening fruit releases ethylene, which ages flowers faster. In Russian flats the heating is often strong in winter, so a cooler spot such as a hallway or a windowsill without a radiator below makes a real difference. If a head starts to droop, a fresh angled cut and a few hours in deep water often revives it.
