Registry Day in Russia: Flowers for the ZAGS Ceremony
Registry day is the day a couple officially registers their marriage at a ZAGS, the Russian civil registry office. In Russia this short state ceremony is the legal wedding, and guests traditionally bring a bouquet for the bride, handed over right after the couple signs the register and steps out of the hall.
If you are abroad and someone close to you is getting married in Russia, flowers are the easiest way to be part of the day. Below I explain how a ZAGS ceremony runs, which flowers suit it, the etiquette Russians follow without thinking about it, and how to time a delivery so the bouquet reaches the right person at the right moment.
How a registry day at a ZAGS works
A Russian marriage registration is booked for a fixed date and a fixed slot, often in 15 to 30 minute intervals on busy Fridays and Saturdays. The couple and their guests gather in a waiting room, the registrar calls them into the ceremonial hall, there is a short speech, the couple sign, exchange rings, and the hall empties for the next couple. The whole thing can take less than half an hour.
Because the schedule is so tight, everything around the ceremony is compressed. Guests congratulate the couple in the foyer or on the steps outside, there is a round of photos, often champagne, and then everyone moves on to a photo walk around the city and the banquet. Flowers are given in that short window after the signing, which is why timing matters more than at a wedding that lasts all day.
Some couples register quietly on a weekday with only witnesses and hold the celebration later. Others combine the registration with a full wedding the same day. Before you plan anything, find out which version your friends have chosen, because it changes where and when your flowers should arrive.
Which flowers suit a registry office wedding
The bride usually carries her own wedding bouquet, so guests bring separate congratulatory bouquets. Light colours are the safe and traditional choice: white, cream, blush and soft peach roses, peonies in early summer, lisianthus, spray roses, chrysanthemums with a neat round head, hydrangea and eucalyptus for texture. A pale palette looks good in photos next to a white dress and never clashes with the bride's own flowers.
Size is worth thinking about. After the ceremony the bride may be holding twenty or thirty bouquets at once, and someone has to carry them all to the car. A compact, well-made bouquet of medium size is more welcome than a huge armful. If you want to give something grand, consider sending it to the couple's home or to the banquet venue instead of the registry office.
Bright reds are not forbidden, but they read as passionate and personal, so most guests leave them to the groom. Strong scents such as lilies are best avoided in a crowded hall and in a bride's arms for photos. Browse the bouquets catalogue with the palette of the wedding in mind; if you do not know it, white and pastel tones are always right.

Russian etiquette: odd numbers, colours and what not to give
The rule every Russian knows: give an odd number of flowers for any happy occasion. Even numbers are reserved for funerals and remembrance. In a large bouquet of many stems nobody counts, but in a small one of five, seven or nine roses the count matters, and an even number at a wedding would look like a mistake.
Yellow flowers carry an old association with separation or jealousy for some older people, so I would not choose an all-yellow bouquet for a wedding, even though younger couples rarely mind. Dark red and very dark purple feel heavy for the occasion. Artificial flowers and wreath-like compositions are not given at weddings at all.
It is polite to hand flowers with the stems pointing down and the wrapping on, since the couple will carry them outside. A short card is always appreciated. If you cannot be there in person, a card saying who the flowers are from helps the couple thank the right people later, when they are sorting through a mountain of bouquets.
Timing a delivery for the ceremony
The most reliable plan is to deliver before the ceremony rather than during it. A courier cannot walk into the hall, and in the rush after the signing the couple will not be looking at their phones. Many guests arrange delivery to the bride's home in the morning, while she is getting ready, or to a friend who will be at the ZAGS and can hand the bouquet over on your behalf.
With us you can choose an exact delivery time within plus or minus 30 minutes, a time window of 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21, or pre-order from 1 to 30 days ahead, which suits a wedding date known well in advance. In large cities express delivery is also possible 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order.
The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival. If the recipient is not there, we agree a second delivery the same day, or with your consent leave the flowers with a neighbour or concierge. On a wedding day it helps to give the number of someone calm and reachable, such as a parent or a witness, rather than the bride herself.
Sending flowers from abroad: practical steps
Collect the details first: the date and time of the registration, the address where the flowers should go, the recipient's name and a phone number of someone who will answer on the day. Decide whether the bouquet goes to the bride, to the couple at home, or to the banquet hall, and write a card text. A card with your text is free, and delivery is anonymous by default, so if you want the couple to know who sent the flowers, sign the card.
You can pay online on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. The details of delivery and payment are on the delivery page. If anything is unclear, for example the right time slot or how to phrase the card in Russian, message a manager on WhatsApp: they can help choose a bouquet, agree the time, address and card text, and send a photo of the bouquet before delivery.
If the couple are celebrating later than the registration, it is fine, even thoughtful, to send flowers on the day after. A bouquet that arrives at home when the rush is over gets more attention than one handed over in a crowd, and it stays on the table where the couple will see it every day of their first week as a married pair.
Keeping wedding bouquets fresh after the ceremony
A registry day often runs into a long evening, and the bouquets may spend hours in a warm car or a banquet hall without water. When they finally get home, recut every stem at an angle by 1-2 cm with a sharp knife, strip any leaves that would sit below the water line and put them in clean, cool water straight away. Roses that have drooped usually recover after a few hours in deep water.
If the couple are travelling the next day, the flowers can wait. Our guide on whether you can leave flowers for a day before giving them explains how to store a bouquet overnight; the same advice applies to bouquets received at a wedding. Keep them away from radiators, direct sun and the fruit bowl, change the water every two days and recut the stems each time, and most wedding flowers will stay beautiful for a week or more.
Frequently asked questions
What is registry day in Russia?
It is the day a couple officially registers their marriage at a ZAGS, the civil registry office. This short ceremony is the legal wedding in Russia, and guests usually bring flowers for the bride.
How many flowers should I give at a Russian wedding?
Always an odd number in a small bouquet, for example five, seven or nine stems. Even numbers are associated with funerals, so avoid them for a wedding.
Can a courier deliver flowers to the registry office during the ceremony?
It is better not to rely on that, as couples spend only a few minutes in the hall and are surrounded by guests. Delivery to the bride's home in the morning or to a guest who will hand the bouquet over is more reliable.
Which colours are best for registry day flowers?
White, cream, blush and other pastel tones are the traditional choice and look good in photos. Leave bold red to the groom and avoid all-yellow bouquets for older relatives.
Can I order wedding flowers in advance?
Yes, you can pre-order delivery 1 to 30 days ahead and choose an exact time or a time window. A manager on WhatsApp can help agree the details.
